Increased cave use by butterflies and moths: a response to climate warming?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Between 2015 and 2019, the list of Lepidoptera from “cave” habitats (i.e., proper caves, rock shelters artificial subterranean structures) in Austria grew 17 to 62 species, although effort data collection remained nearly constant late 1970s onwards. The newly recorded moths butterflies were resting caves during daytime warm season, three species also overwintering there. We observed Catocala elocata at 28 cave inspections, followed by Mormo maura (18), nupta (7), Peribatodes rhomboidaria, Euplagia quadripunctaria (6). More than half have been repeatedly or abroad, so their relationship with such sites is apparently not completely random. Since increase records coincided a considerable rise annual number hot days (maximum temperatures ≥30°C) onwards, we interpret growing inclination certain towards sheltering as behavioral reaction climate warming.

Climatic warming increases voltinism in European butterflies and moths.
Climate change is altering geographical ranges, population dynamics and phenologies of many organisms. For ectotherms, increased ambient temperatures frequently have direct consequences for metabolic rates, activity patterns and developmental rates. Consequently, in many insect species both an earlier beginning and prolongation of seasonal duration occurred in parallel with recent global warmin...

We investigated the combined effect of reduced phosphorus supply and warmer winter and spring conditions on the diatom spring bloom of a shallow lake. Simulations with a simple dynamic model indicated that reduced ice cover and increasing water temperatures resulted in a more intense and earlier bloom independently of phosphorous concentrations. However, whereas the collapse of the bloom was ca...

[1] We examine six different coupled climate model simulations to determine the ocean biological response to climate warming between the beginning of the industrial revolution and 2050. We use vertical velocity, maximum winter mixed layer depth, and sea ice cover to define six biomes. Climate warming leads to a contraction of the highly productive marginal sea ice biome by 42% in the Northern H...
متن کاملFemale receptivity in butterflies and moths.
Female receptivity in butterflies and moths is influenced by a multitude of factors that vary between virgin and mated females, and is often affected by the quality and persistence of courting males. Mated females of polyandrous species frequently display a period of non-receptivity following mating, often resulting from factors transferred by the male at mating. Some of these compounds have a ...

Satyrinae butterflies (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) and grasses (Poaceae) are very diverse and distributed worldwide. Most Satyrinae use grasses as host plants, but the temporal scale of this tight association is not known. Here, we present a phylogenetic study of Satyrinae butterflies and related groups, based on 5.1 kilobases from six gene regions and 238 morphological characters for all major l...
